Reading Is Cool is a free and unique literacy program open to public K-6 grade classrooms in Santa Clara County and southern Alameda County (Fremont, Newark and Union City).  It promotes the importance of reading while sharing the excitement and enjoyment of a good book.  Through a multifaceted approach that includes exclusive experiences and incentives, students are encouraged to succeed as individual readers and as a classroom team.

How does it work?

This program is designed for individual classrooms and runs from October 2008 through April 2009, parallel to the San Jose Sharks regular season.  The best feature of the Reading Is Cool program is that it is easy to integrate and teachers make it fit their class' needs!  Every teacher who registers will be provided:

A set of Top Reader of the Month medals

A Top Reader of the Year medal

         Bookmarks for every student

Certificates of Participation for every student

Incentive Poster reminding students of potential prizes

Tracking Poster for students to record monthly totals

Top Reader Poster to acknowledge outstanding readers

Students track the number of pages they read each month on Student Reading Logs downloaded from the Reading Is Cool website.  Teachers then report their class' total pages read each month online for consideration for class "team" prizes.  For the individual awards, teachers select the student each month they feel is most deserving based on number of pages, minutes or books read, most improved or greatest effort.  That's it!

Along the way their are other elements to Reading Is Cool that you can read about in the links above.  They include Read-Ins, Private Practices, Top Reader Night and more!
