Grant Recipients Receive Over $256,000 in Funding This Season
May 10, 2010

On Sunday May 2 San Jose Sharks President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Jamison, and the Sharks Foundation donated $256,989 to its 2009-10 Grant Recipients during an on-ice presentation during the game against the Detroit Red Wings.

"We hope that the support of the Sharks Foundation will help these organizations in their continued efforts to make a positive impact in our community," said Jamison.  "The Sharks Foundation selected these organizations because they reach deeply into the community in many different ways and touch the lives of thousands of kids in Santa Clara County.  We are proud to be associated with these outstanding groups."

The Sharks Foundation board selected 11 beneficiaries from more than 85 grant applications that were submitted last Fall. Representatives from each organization were invited to the game and were hosted in the personal luxury suite of goaltender Evgeni Nabokov. During the first intermission, the representatives, joined by Jamison and Sharks mascot S.J. Sharkie took to the ice to be recognized before that evening's sell out crowd.

"It was a fantastic experience, not only did we get to meet Greg Jamison, but it was great that the Sharks actually presented us with a check on the ice," said Erin Smith with Bring Me A Book Foundation. "Usually with grants our foundation receives we are just given a check by a representative, but with the Sharks the whole organization was involved and we even got to experience a Sharks playoff game, which was amazing. We are very appreciative for everything the Sharks organization did for us and we want to thank them."

In total, nearly $2 million in funding was requested.  The selected organizations all met the criteria set forth by the Sharks Foundation which states that the organization must be classified as 501(C)3 non-profit group that offers programs that support local youth in Santa Clara County.  New for this year, organizations had to apply under the focus areas of Education, Health & Safety and Character Development.
