Fans Raise $14,000 for Haiti Relief; Sharks Players Organize Their Own "Shirt Off Our Back" Auction
March 1, 2010

Time and time again, Sharks fans have stepped up to the plate, opened their wallets, and given for a good cause. For the recently held "Haiti Relief Night" collection, Sharks fans donated $11,000 at the doors while another $3,000 was raised from the silent auction.

But it wasn't only the fans that decided to make a commitment to help Haiti, which is struggling to rebuild after a massive earthquake rocked the country. Upon hearing about the generosity of the fans, the Sharks athletes decided to hold a special fundraiser of their own.

After the pregame warm-up skate on Saturday, Mar. 6 (Sharks vs. Columbus), the Sharks players will immediately take the jerseys off their backs and sign them.  These signed, pregame-worn jerseys will be auctioned off at the Sharks Foundation Booth located outside of section 124 on the concourse that evening.

The jerseys will be sold via blind bid auction format.  In the blind bid format, fans indicate the highest price they are willing to pay for an individual jersey on a form and drop the form in to the box that corresponds to their desired jersey. As with a normal auction, the item goes to the highest bidder. Items are only available at the game and bids cannot be made via proxy over email or phone.

Proceeds from this auction will benefit UNICEF in support of the organization's efforts to help the earthquake victims. UNICEF will deploy essential aid – including safe water, sanitation supplies, therapeutic foods, medical supplies and temporary shelter materials – as quickly as possible.

UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children's rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential.  Working in over 150 countries, UNICEF provides children with health care, clean water, nutrition, education, emergency relief, and more.

Because of current conditions on the ground in Haiti, item aid delivery poses quite a challenge, with roads, electric power sources, communications systems and other infrastructure destroyed in many areas. For this reason the Sharks Foundation is not seeking physical items such as clothes or toiletries at this time.

Sharks fans unable to attend the game are encouraged to donate online at www.unicef.org
