Captain's Stick Auction to Benefit Local High School Football Player

Join the Sharks Foundation on Saturday, Jan. 16 (vs. Edmonton) as Sharks Captain Rob Blake hosts the annual Captain's Stick Auction at the Sharks Foundation booth (located outside of Section 124). Autographed used sticks from numerous members of the 2009-10 team will be up for auction via the blind bid format through the first intermission. 
The Stick Auction was created several seasons ago, with the intention of supporting someone in our community who is in critical need of immediate financial assistance. In his first year as the Sharks Captain, Blake has selected San Jose High Academy football player Matt Blea as the auction's beneficiary. Blea suffered a critical head injury during a game on Thanksgiving Day.
"This kid and his family have been through so much and I'm sure those medical bills are piling up,"" said Blake. ""I'm honored to be in a position to help them and wish him a speedy recovery.""
Blea, a 16-year-old star running back for the Bulldogs, absorbed a clean hit by a member of the opposing team, fell backward and hit his head on the turf. The 5-foot-5 teenager had brain surgery that night, underwent a weeklong drug-induced coma and remained at Valley Medical Center until a few days before Christmas. After nearly a month in the hospital, Blea was released and even took a quick jog outside of the hospital.
Sharks fans unable to attend the Jan. 16 stick auction can support the Blea family by making a donation to help offset his medical expenses. The San Jose Unified School District has established a bank account to support the Blea family. Donations may be sent to:
